Traction Engines and Road Rollers

Club members own nearly twenty full size  engines including agricultural engines, stationery engines, road engines, steam rollers and steam wagons, a number of which were acquired in the 1960’s in the early years of preservation. Makers include; Allchin, Armstrong Whitworth, Aveling and Porter, Burrell,  Marshall, Foden.....

Many of the owners have living vans and water carts which they pull behind them in a train. Water carts are used to top up the water in a steam engine extending the distance they can cover on a road run.

In addition we have 4 deisel powerd road rollers of verious ages one of which worked on an American airfield.

'40' is a 1948 Aveling Barford GB1 diesel roller. Shropshire County Council used it until 1983. Being only 4 foot wide it could be used on some paths as well as road ways.(THe small green on at the far end of the picture,)

'248' is a 1944 Aveling Barford PV8 roller. Originally petrol, but later upgraded to diesel, 144 PV8s where hastily put together to aid with the war effort. They were used on runways often and some where used on American air bases across Europe.(THe matt green one with a white star.
